Anwar Ibrahim, former Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia, talks to Owen Bennett-Jones on The Interview
Anwar Ibrahim was a successful politician headed for the very top. The favourite of the forceful Malaysian leader Mahatir Mohammed, he could do no wrong and he even deputised as Prime Minister on several occasions.
But then came the financial crisis which crippled much of Asia, and fundamental cracks began to appear in the relationship between the two men. Amid mutual allegations of corruption and a sensational accusation of sodomy, Anwar Ibrahim was tried and imprisoned for a total of six years.
Now a free man but unable to re-enter politics until April 2008 due to the corruption judgement, he is gearing up for a major political comeback. He talks to Owen Bennett-Jones about building trust across religious divides, coping with prison life and why he believes his political resurgence is so essential.
